The village of Campillos is situated in the western district of Antequera. The mainly flat land is covered with olive groves and cereal fields while thicket and scrub predominate in the hilly regions. In the area surrounding Campillos, there are lagoons which, despite being dry for most of the year, have been declared a Nature Reserve by the Andalusian government's Environmental Agency. The most important of these are: Dulce, Salada, Redonda, Capacete, Marcela, Cerrero and Camuñas. The city centre comprises a mixture of stately homes and recently-constructed modern buildings.

From Málaga:
On exiting the airport, head towards Málaga and follow the signposts for Seville and Antequera. When you are on the N-331, aim for Seville until you come to a sign for Campillos (about 50 Kms from Málaga).
There is a second option, namely the A-357 road, which runs directly from Málaga to Campillos, via the Andalucía Technology Park. If you are coming from the airport, to take this road, head towards Málaga until you see the sign for the A-357. To get to Cortijo, follow the A-357 until you are 10 kilometres from Campillos, where a road on your right links up with Los Embalses, Guadalhorce (MA-451). Stay on this link road for 2 km., after which you will find a slip road on your left (MA-452). If you take this for exactly five kilometres, the Old Cortijo, or Country House, of Montero will come into view on your right hand side. The A-357 is a road of considerable tourist value and you can take it to get to the Andalucía Technology Park.
From Seville:
Take the A-92 to Málaga as far as La Roda then take the direction for Sierra de Yeguas-Campillos.
From Madrid and Levante:
You can go almost all the way by motorway if you head for Granada where you then follow the A-92 Seville road. The Campillos exit is clearly signposted in the vicinity of Antequera. You need the N-342 road for Campillos.

The most noteworthy monument is the Parish Church of Our Lady of Repose (Ntra. Sra. del Reposo), whose construction dates back to the 16th century (1506), although the building underwent important modifications at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries, leaving it with its present-day appearance, especially the main facade, which is in Baroque and is regarded as one of the most spectacular of its type in the Antequera region.
The interior of the temple consists of three principal naves and a third set aside for chapels, which have an exuberantly decorative effect. On the outside, the tower rises in severalsections , the last one accommodating the bells, with the balustrade at the top and the roof in the shape of a pyramid, covered with ceramic tiles.
Another important monument in Campillos is the Hermitage of San Benito, patron saint of the village, probably built somewhere between 1578 and 1596 and subsequently renovated structurally in the 18th century.
Located outside of the village and of archaeological importance from the geo-strategic viewpoint are sites such as those at Capacete (villa and Roman baths), Castillón de Gobantes (Roman epoch), Cortijo La Cuesta (Roman necropolis), the castle (medieval), los Castillones (Roman settlement), las Aguilillas, etcétera.

FESTIVALS AND TRADITIONS |

The key events held are January 5th – the Procession of the 3 Kings – Carnival and Holy Week. On July 10 and 11, the Patron Saint's Festivals is held with the San Benito verbena, while in the middle of August the fair takes place for a period of four days. Campillos, in common with other Malagan towns, has its own songs and dances, such as the fandango and las malagueñas. As a result of its geographical proximity and other influences, the village has also popularised sevillanas.

GASTRONOMY |

Products from pig – loin pork in lard, pork sausages, black pudding and barbecued steak as well as cured ham – are key elements of Campillos gastronomy throughout the year, in addition to other products from the same animal, such as stew and Antequera fritters, in which fine ham cuts play a prominent part. As well as these dishes, another of its specialities is salmonarejo, to which orange, fried fish, cod etc are often added. Chick pea, lentil and broad bean stews, breadcrumbs and gazpacho complete the rich gastronomic offer, alongside such sweet products as homemade fairy cakes and less sweet items such as bread rolls in oil.

Several archaeological sites exist in the region including those at Castillones, Castellón, Capacete, Capitán, Moralejo, La Mezquita, and the Camorra-Peñarrubia complex. There are remains which span the period from the Neolithic Age, evolving to the Libyan-Phoenician culture of the coast; the very specific Iberian model and that imposed by Roman colonization which prevailed until the Roman Empire. Remains can be found in ceramic, aslar and columns of these villages settlements and, in particular, of Roman hegemony as well as of fortifications and settlements in places known as Los Castillones, El Volao, Aljibejo, Romeroso. Coins have also appeared from very different epochs depicting allegorical figures and rulers, small and large sculptures of Octavio, Claudio, Trajano, Constantine, etc., which clearly demonstrate the unification of the villages and towns of the local area which must have been destroyed by German invaders. The first population centre came about with the arrival, in 1492, of a number of residents from Osuna, coal merchants and livestock farmers, following the conquest of Teba and the subsequent pacification of the area, taking advantage of the repopulating policy of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. They settled in abundant oak woods and used the pastureland for their livestock. A short while afterwards and significantly, settlers from Teba and Antequera arrived, which made it necessary, in the second half of the 16th century, to extend and renovate the dwellings and draw out an intersecting street system. It did not take long for the growing village of Campillos to surpass Teba, on which it depended administratively, in terms of numbers of inhabitants. By the end of the 17th century and, based on one of the clauses of the so-called Servicio de Millones, by which the king was able to benefit to the tune of two million ducats from the sale of state jurisdictions and offices, a number of wealthy residents asked to be granted legal powers, justice and regiments, with mayors and four aldermen so the town could enjoy full legal status.
King Charles granted Campillos the status of Royal Burgh with full jurisdiction on November 6th 1680, thereby exempting it from control by Teba.
